Introducing: Wonders of Worship
Kelly and I are so excited to introduce Wonders of Worship (WOW)– a new program for kids and grown-ups during worship this year. This program will lead us to discover how God’s Word, our worship, and God’s world all fit together. We’ll learn together using music and art! You'll notice a new poster in the sanctuary called the Tree of Life. It was created by artist Vonda Drees specifically for this project (see the end for more information). All of the images you see within the Tree of Life have a meaning and are related to our worship. Come take a look at the poster and ponder! During the children’s message each week, kids will receive: a special WOW trading card (there are 40 to collect!) and a coloring sheet related to the Tree of Life poster. You'll also see the images on the trading card as the bulletin cover so adults can follow along. Are your kids nervous about coming up front for the kid’s message? Come up with them! The young and young at heart are welcome to come up front. WOW is designed to help us learn about worship and enrich our whole congregation. We’re excited to start this Sunday, September 28th! The Wonders of Worship is a project of Nourishing Vocation with Children at the Lutheran Center at St. Olaf College funded by the Lilly Endowment. Joy Lutheran is one of 20 congregations piloting this program across the ELCA. Artist Vonda Drees designed the tree of life specifically for this project. |

A Brief Update from the Strategic Planning Team
There is much more to come in the next few months about our strategic planning process, so we wanted to add a quick reminder of the why, who, and what of this process. Take a look below! Also, take a read at Jim's reflection on his blog post below. Why: In contrast to declining participation in mainstream churches nationwide, Joy is flourishing. Rather than resting on our laurels, however, we would like to take time to consider where God is calling us next. What: We are embarking on a year-long effort to (1) listen to one another and our community, (2) focus on what we have heard, and (3) put these ideas into practice. Who: We are working with LEADconnects (leadconnects.org), an ELCA-based organization that works with congregations across the country. For the “listen” phase, Laura Ross, Betty Veldhuis, Jim Hemsath, Henry Huntington, and Pastor Sean will be working with Jessica Noonan from LEAD to conduct a congregational survey, focus group discussions, and community outreach. Later steps will involve others, too. Where you come in: If you have questions, please ask any of us. Stay tuned for the survey and focus groups, and please consider any invitations for the various ways you can help with this effort. The more people involved, the greater the likelihood of success! |

Homestead Elementary Weekend Bag Program
Joy Lutheran has teamed up with the Homestead Elementary School's Student Leadership Council to help them provide consistent, shelf-table, and easy-to-make options each week for almost 100 students who have food insecurities on the weekends. This number could even grow as this program becomes known. At an estimated cost of $5.00 per bag and roughly 35 weeks of service, they are looking at a total estimate cost of $17,500. Each bag will include: 2 oatmeal packs, 2 packages of ramen, 2 boxes of Macaroni and cheese, 2 granola/protein bars, 2 cups applesauce/fruit cups, and 1 can tuna/chicken. **PLEASE NOTE.... We are only able to accept the items specified on this list. This allows for appropriate distribution** Joy Lutheran has designated a spot in the narthex for food donated to this program. You can bring your food in anytime, or monteary donations can be made on our website by following the link below (scroll down to Homestead Weekend Bags). JOY’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONCOMING UP ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26TH! Yes! We have a wonderful day of celebration coming up on Sunday, October 26th, which is also Reformation Sunday. Our church has a rich past and has touched many lives; we want to cherish that history and give thanks for God’s resilient love and show appreciation for those who helped make our church a good and joyous place. What will make the service special:
And there will be food and festivities afterwards!
Please look for a postcard with an RSVP QR code coming your way! RSVPs are VERY important! (This won’t be the last time you will hear this ) There will be plenty of places to help, and we will have sign-up sheets for those, like supplying cookies, making coffee and doing clean-up afterwards. One area where we could REALLY use help soon is the making of a looping video. Old photographs need to be scanned and incorporated with more current photographs and then combined into a video. If you are blessed with the ability to do this, please contact Sue Weimer. Lastly, for your wardrobe planning, the colors are RED and GOLD!
If you haven't RSVP'd yet please do so, it is very important to have an accurate head count For more infomation visit: https://joy.elvanto.net/form/c2f8eb6a-fd28-4694-8a45-aec00c3b1a94

Guest Blog: Jim H on Strategic Planning- Saturday, September 27, 2025 Beloved. What a great thought, that we are all beloved, by God, unconditionally with no regard to the differences we each have, that love a free gift by the grace of Jesus. How does it get any better than that? In September we had a kick-off meeting with the LEAD Consultant – Jessica Noonan, who both shared the message and provided us with a presentation. LEAD is a consulting company that was formed with the Texas/Louisiana ELCA synod. Originally, a group within the Synod created to help churches develop plans for going forward in their ministry, what we know now as LEAD outgrew the Synod itself and was formed as a Non-Profit organization to provide that consulting service outside of the original synod footprint. It is church based and Lutheran in its approach, Jessica, the Executive Director of LEAD is an ordained Deacon in the ELCA. A proposal to utilize the services of LEAD was made and with a generous gift to support the action, approved at our Annual Meeting this past February. Since that time, a group of volunteers from the Congregation was called and over the summer, studied scripture and came together to be that interface between LEAD, the Community and the Congregation and now finally are ready to move forward with the process we are calling Strategic Planning. After our time with Jessica, we have heard questions from the Congregation that can be best summarized as Why and What? The What is the simpler question, and I would like to discuss this first. The first phase of this work is based on listening – listening to God, what is God’s dream for us; listening to the congregation – how are we doing, what are our dreams; and listening to our neighbors, what are their needs, what do they have to teach us? This is where the most time will be spent, there are no pre-determined plans, and it will start with the congregation. Over the next months we will be listening through a number of vehicles – a congregational survey, through a number of focus groups and then through specific one on one conversation. From there we will move the discussion to the community, heading Jesus’ commission to his disciples to be witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, moving outside our building to areas we may not have visited before. The second phase is to focus on what we have heard, to look for themes and needs. To truly discern what God has in mind for us. The final phase will be to create an actionable plan – not one to put on the shelf but one with specific action items, next steps and commitments. Whether or not the plan goes on the shelf will be determined by the congregation – what are we willing to do? Which takes us to the Why, and the real question is why are we doing this now? The first thing to note is that is has nothing to do with growth, it has more with how we sustain our mission and perhaps more importantly how do we flourish, not just get by, but truly flourish as a community of God. My family has been a member here for a little more than 30 years. When we moved to Alaska and joined Joy it was this small church made up of a bunch of 40 somethings and their families and we met in what is now our Fellowship Hall. The church continued to grow, and we made the decision to build a new sanctuary that would fit 3 – 4 times the numbers that Brause Hall could hold. We continued to grow, and we hit a peak and then life happened. Demographics changed, families relocated and were not “replaced.” Social issues took center stage with struggles related from the simple calling a female leader to the involved discussion on where we fit or did not fit as a welcoming congregation to the LGBTQA community. Membership plummeted, budget discussion was all about where we cut, how do get new members (revenue), and as recent as 2019 when we began a call process, discussions were still ongoing about sharing the church with another congregation, sharing a pastor all thoughts on managing the budget. Then Covid, perhaps a blessing in disguise and with that unconditional love we are blessed with, were able to reset who and what Joy Lutheran Church was. We have come from the golden years of the 90’s, through challenges and strife, the veritable refiners fire to what we are today. A vibrant multigenerational welcoming (the only true welcoming church in Eagle River) congregation that is right sized for the future. So why mess with this, we are good, let’s not mess things up. Life is Good. Perhaps, that is the reason why. We have been blessed, we are filled with love and abundance, and we need to open our hearts and minds to where God wants us to go. The time to look to the future and build on our strengths – to discover what those strengths are and to dream about what we might be able to do next. I will reiterate, this is not about growth for growths safe, it is not about increasing revenues, it is about listening to God and where he is leading us next. Our world quite frankly is a scary and changing place – the future is not for us to know. But what we do know is that change will be upon us. Though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Now is the time to be still and listen to God. Ultimately this is the why, it is what we are challenged to do every day. Maybe this isn’t the answer that some are looking for - a little to nebulous. But the reality is that we are good, life is good and that is the reason, we have the resources now to take the time and deliberate and celebrate on what we have accomplished, but listen, listen to other voices on where we might be needed. Personally, I don’t know where this process will take us, but I’m willing to try. Why are stepping out on this potentially unknown path? Because we are beloved and we can. O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And the people said Amen.

Additions to Our Worship Life This Year
Dear Church, Every spring and summer, I select a theme or area of ministry for deeper study. Over the last several months I dove into worship and liturgy – specifically intergenerational worship. The time together we spend together in singing together, praying, hearing God’s Word, and sharing the Lord’s Meal is the core of the Christian life. In worship we come together in a particular way to encounter God’s loving presence anew, to hear words of God’s challenge and grace, and practice the very things we hope to emulate in our everyday lives: sharing peace, offering and receiving forgiveness, living in community, and more. This particular rhythm to our worship life is called liturgy. I was reminded recently of something one of my professors said: liturgy forms us for a life of following Jesus. I have come to realize how true this is. For example, have you ever found yourself singing or whistling the tune with the words Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world…? Or exclaimed, “Thanks be to God!” after hearing good news? Or, sighing Lord, have mercy…when confronted with something tragic on the news? I know I have (yes, I know, big surprise, right?). But I’ll bet many of you have had one of these liturgical moments, too. Liturgy gives us language that walks with us in our daily lives like a companion. It forms and shapes our faith in ways we might not even notice at the time. This year, I am trying something new with our confirmation students. We’ll be using our liturgy and worship as a foundation for learning about the triune God we worship each week, our Lutheran tradition, and the many, many dimensions to a lifelong faith. One of the ways our confirmation students will learn is by helping lead worship! This means our students will be more involved in our worship setting by performing two new roles: Cross-bearer and Gift-bearer. The most noticeable addition will be students processing into the worship space with a cross and the bible or liturgical book. Further, we will begin reading the Gospel passage from the center of the room near the baptismal font. This is a powerful way of reminding us that God’s Word – the Good News of Jesus – is at the center of our life together and that God’s Word has always been read aloud amongst God’s beloved people. There are some other additions you will notice too. I want to emphasize these additions to our worship life will not only enrich our liturgy but also, importantly, provide our students with meaningful opportunities to be formed and grow through worship leadership. Finally, I invite you to encourage our students as they learn these new roles and practice leadership. Saying “good job” or “thank you” can make be so impactful for them! See you in worship! + Pastor Sean |
