Sunday WorshipSunday May 19th 2024 Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Crossing all boundaries that would separate us, the Spirit brings the wideness of God’s mercy to places we least expect it—to a crowd of strangers of different lands and tongues, to dry bones, to our weak hearts. Jesus promises his disciples that they will be accompanied by the Holy Spirit, and that this Spirit reveals the truth. We celebrate that we too have been visited with this same Spirit. Guided by the truth, we join together in worship, and then disperse to share the fullness of Christ’s love with the world.

Agape Love
If I were to ever get a tattoo it would be a word or verse from scripture in its original language – ancient Greek or Hebrew. Afterall, I worked my tail off in seminary learning koine Greek and its consolation to know I could read and comprehend such a tattoo! (Side note: did you know there is a tattoo parlor in Jerusalem that has been tattooing Holy Land pilgrimage-goers continously for over 500 years? Anyway...). It’s been said that words create worlds. Words and their meaning(s) matter. Keeping this in mind proved useful this week at Holy Grounds as we discussed the previous Sunday’s Gospel passage, John 15:9-17 where Jesus commands his to “love one another as I have loved you”. One of our students noted how Christians using the word “love” (as in love your neighbor), in their experience, confuses people because in our culture we have an exaggerated sense of romantic love and less clarity about the meaning of love. This is a wise observation. So…what does Jesus mean when he says “love one another?” This is a great question! Ancient Greek offers some insight about different types of love:
And then there is…agape (αγαπε) love. This is God-love. It’s unconditional, persevering, holy and wholly, stubborn love. It originates in God and is God (1st John). So, when Jesus says, over and over again, to love one another, can you guess what type to which he refers? You guessed it, agape. I think this means we are to love other people as God loves them. This makes Jesus’ command even harder because this type of love is not based on whether we like someone but the belief that God loves them. God loves them because – like you and I – they are created in the image of God (Genesis 1). Even though we’re imperfect reflections we still bear the fingerprints of our Creator who considers each of us “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139). Agape love towards other people is a lifelong practice – just like a sport or hobby. It requires attention, tending, and adjusting. Loving others as God loves them is worth pursuing. If Jesus were to get a tattoo, I wonder what it would be? For more infomation visit:

UPCOMING EVENTS

Electronic Recycling EventSaturday, May 18, 2024 We will be having our electronics recycling event Saturday, May 18th, 2024 10am – 2pm. This recycling is for household electronics and our partners in this are Total Reclaim and Eagle River High School green club. The cost is FREE / carload, which is quite a deal considering how much it costs to recycle. Monitors or large screen TVs will have a small cost. Appliances (refrigerator, dryer, washer) and smoke detectors are not allowed because appliances take up too much room and smoke detectors contain radioactive materials. If you’d like to help, they will set up at 9:30 and we’ve divided sign up into two slots 9:30 to 12 and 12 to 2:30 and we’ll post that after church Sunday. Volunteers usually just help direct traffic, answer questions, etc. No real manual labor because Total Reclaim brings a bunch of guys to disassemble the materials into their component parts. Let your neighbors and co-workers know. Let’s keep these things out of the dump! |
Joyful Women at the Alaska Run for WomenJune 8th 2024 Joy’s team will walk (or run) the 1- and 5-mile versions (timed and untimed) of the 32nd Alaska Run for Women [https://www.akrfw.org/] in Anchorage. As in past years, we are participating to honor the many women in our congregation who have experienced breast cancer. If you’d like to join Team Joyful Women in person or virtually, you can register to join us until June 7 at https://www.akrfw.org/register/registration. In order to include all women regardless of economic circumstances, the Run for Women has no set registration fee but relies solely on donations. Last year, we raised $750 so we’ve set that as our goal again this year. We’d love for you to cheer us on along the route. The event begins and ends at UAA, and the route circles the campuses and adjacent neighborhoods. You can find a map of the race at https://www.akrfw.org/event-info/maps. We’ll acknowledge the entire team at church on Sunday the 9th. There will be more information to follow, but feel free to contact Nancy Hemsath if you have questions in the meantime. New Facebook Page for Knik Cluster
The Alaska Synod of the ELCA consists of 30 congregations divided into clusters. JOY belongs to the Knik Cluster which also includes Good Shepherd Lutheran (Wasilla), Trinity Lutheran (Palmer), Table of Grace (Bethel), and River of Life (Chugiak). Delegates from each of the Knik Cluster congregations met during the 2024 Alaska Synod Assembly and what became clear during this time is that each congregation is engaged in some amazing ministries in their community. In order to keep each other updated about what each congregation is doing, we agreed to create a Facebook Page! The page is now live and available on Facebook. Search for "Knik Cluster". Make sure to follow the page so that you receive updates in your feed about what each congregation is doing. We can support one another and share events! If you have any questions, reach out to Pastor Sean Avery at Joy Lutheran. |
